MUHAMMAD’S TEACHINGS TO MANKIND

ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

“ The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him said, "No alms (1) are due on fewer than five camels; no alms are due on less than five ounces [of silver] (2); and no alms are due on less than five awsuq (3). Footnotes: (1) (Zakāh): One of the five pillars of Islām: It is a calculated proportion of a Muslim's wealth that is paid annually for the benefit of the needy. It is due on certain assets, once their value reaches a certain threshold and the calculation varies according to the nature of the asset. (2) An ounce, here, is equivalent to forty dirhams. (3) Awsuq is a special measure for food-grains, where one wasq equals 60 ṣā', each ṣā' being equivalent to approximately 2600 grams. ”

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْكِنْدِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِى الْمَسْعُودِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ نَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى حَصِيرٍ فَقَامَ وَقَدْ أَثَّرَ فِى جَنْبِهِ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْنَا لَكَ وِطَاءً. فَقَالَ مَا لِى وَمَا لِلدُّنْيَا مَا أَنَا فِى الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ كَرَاكِبٍ اسْتَظَلَّ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا. قَالَ وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ عُمَرَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, once slept on a mat made of palm-leaves that left a mark on his side when he woke up. So we said, "Messenger of God, if only we could get you a bed!" He replied, "What have I to do with this world?
